    Secado natural de yuca para la alimentacion animal: Una nueva agroindustria en Colombia

    A collaborative project of the Colombian Integrated Rural Development Program (DRI) and CIAT, aimed at establishing small agroindustrial firms to produce dry cassava on the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, is described. It began with the installation of a pilot plant for natural drying of cassava, with the collaboration of a group of 15 farmers. This plant operated on an exptl. basis in 1981 to obtain information about the efficiency of the process under the conditions existing on the Colombian Atlantic Coast and to determine the product`s acceptability by the animal feed industry. In 1982, during the project`s 2nd phase, the pilot plant was operated semicommercially to obtain data on production costs; likewise, it showed the economical and technical feasibility of the process. In 1983, the 3rd phase began, consisting in the replication of the project in other cassava-producing areas of the region. In 1984 and 1985, the project grew considerably, with 20 drying plants functioning in 1984 and 36 in 1985. To establish small-scale natural cassava drying plants, the following requisites are essential: (1) selection of a processing technology that can be assimilated, controlled, and easily managed by farmers; (2) implementation of integrated programs of processing, production, and commercialization that reduce the risks and increase net incomes of farmers; and (3) provision of institutional support that is adequate in terms of technical assistance, credit facilities, management and fiscal training, and of advice in the formation and consolidation of cooperative and associative groups for agricultural production.     Energy transfer in nonlinear network models of proteins

    We investigate how nonlinearity and topological disorder affect the energy relaxation of local kicks in coarse-grained network models of proteins. We find that nonlinearity promotes long-range, coherent transfer of substantial energy to specific, functional sites, while depressing transfer to generic locations. Remarkably, transfer can be mediated by the self-localization of discrete breathers at distant locations from the kick, acting as efficient energy-accumulating centers.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Perception of nonnative tonal contrasts by Mandarin-English and English-Mandarin sequential bilinguals

    This study examined the role of acquisition order and crosslinguistic similarity in influencing transfer at the initial stage of perceptually acquiring a tonal third language (L3). Perception of tones in Yoruba and Thai was tested in adult sequential bilinguals representing three different first (L1) and second language (L2) backgrounds: L1 Mandarin-L2 English (MEBs), L1 English-L2 Mandarin (EMBs), and L1 English-L2 intonational/non-tonal (EIBs). MEBs outperformed EMBs and EIBs in discriminating L3 tonal contrasts in both languages, while EMBs showed a small advantage over EIBs on Yoruba. All groups showed better overall discrimination in Thai than Yoruba, but group differences were more robust in Yoruba. MEBs’ and EMBs’ poor discrimination of certain L3 contrasts was further reflected in the L3 tones being perceived as similar to the same Mandarin tone; however, EIBs, with no knowledge of Mandarin, showed many of the same similarity judgments. These findings thus suggest that L1 tonal experience has a particularly facilitative effect in L3 tone perception, but there is also a facilitative effect of L2 tonal experience. Further, crosslinguistic perceptual similarity between L1/L2 and L3 tones, as well as acoustic similarity between different L3 tones, play a significant role at this early stage of L3 tone acquisition.Published versio

    Host-parasite fluctuating selection in the absence of specificity

    Fluctuating selection driven by coevolution between hosts and parasites is important for the generation of host and parasite diversity across space and time. Theory has focused primarily on infection genetics, with highly specific ‘matching allele’ frameworks more likely to generate fluctuating selection dynamics (FSD) than ‘gene-for-gene’ (generalist-specialist) frameworks. However, the environment, ecological feedbacks, and life-history characteristics may all play a role in determining when FSD occurs. Here, we develop eco- evolutionary models with explicit ecological dynamics to explore the ecological, epidemiological and host life-history drivers of FSD. Our key result is to demonstrate for the first time that specificity between hosts and parasites is not required to generate FSD. Furthermore, highly specific host-parasite interactions produce unstable, less robust stochastic fluctuations in contrast to interactions that lack specificity altogether or those that vary from generalist to specialist, which produce predictable limit cycles. Given the ubiquity of ecological feedbacks and the variation in the nature of specificity in host parasite interactions, our work emphasizes the underestimated potential for host- parasite coevolution to generate fluctuating selection

    Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra at Reduced Temperatures. I. Principles and Methods

    Low temperature absorption and fluorescence spectra of solids, liquids, and solutions often reveal increased spectral detail of use in analytical procedures and molecular structure studies. Nevertheless, while qualitative observations of the influence of liquid air temperatures upon optical properties were undertaken very early, investigations of the absorption and fluorescence of organic compounds at the temperature of liquid nitrogen (-195.6°; 77.4 °K.) and below have appeared only sporadically. Because of the potential usefulness of the technique we have undertaken a systematic study of the low temperature spectra of substances of biochemical interest. The present paper discusses the methods employed; subsequent papers will deal with the experimental results. In this work, we have emphasized the wave-length location of absorption bands and the accurate determination of relative optical densities rather than precision in the determination of absolute optical densities, thus permitting the use of simpler methods than would otherwise be necessary

    The Extended Line Region of 3C 299

    We present results of HST observations of the radio galaxy 3C 299. The broad-band F702W (R) and F555W (V) images (WFPC2/PC) show an elliptical galaxy, with a comet-like structure extending to the NE in the radio jet direction. The [OIII]λ\lambda5007 emission line map, shows a bi-conical structure centered on the nucleus, that overlaps the structure found in the broad-band filters. The radio core coincides with the center of the bi-conical structure and the radio axes are aligned with the direction of the cones. These data show clear evidence of a strong interaction between the radio jet and the NE morphology of the galaxy. We show evidence that this NE region is an ENLR; the line-ratio diagnostics show that models involving gas shocked by the radio-jet plus ionization from a precursor HII region, produced itself by the ionizing photons of the postshocked gas on the preshocked gas provide a good match to the observations. We investigate the spatial behavior of the ionizing parameter UU, by determining the [OIII]/[OII] line ratio which is sensitive to the change of the ionization parameter, and trace its behavior over the ENLR along the radio jet direction. We find that [OIII]/[OII] does not follow a simple dilution model, but rather that it is approximately constant over a large range of distance from the nucleus thus requiring a local source of ionization which seems to be compatible with the shock models driven by the radio jet.Comment: 17 pages, 9 Postscript figures, ApJ accepted, uses aaspp.st
